The 3-4-3 is a formation that uses three central defenders and, ahead of them, a double pivot in central midfield. Two wing-backs provide attacking width, while a front line of three can line up in several different ways. It is increasingly common to see a narrow front three, with two number 10s supporting a single centre-forward.

In the continuation of our series exploring football formations, today we take a look at the rather unusual 3-3-4 system. Although this tactic is scarcely used in modern football (other than when chasing a late goal at the end of a game), it has had some recent exponents and remains a viable choice for high-pressing and attack oriented sides.
The 4-3-3 formation is a revamped version of the 4-2-4 formation. It was first used by the Brazilian national team in the 1962 World Cup. The initial 4-3-3 formation was played with three narrow midfielders that protected the defenders and moved across the field as a coordinated unit. The 5-3-2 is generally used by teams who are looking to grab a goal. A nd then drop back and defend the lead. However, as proven by Brazil, the 5-3-2 can be quite an attacking formation at times. When attacking, the 5-3-2 becomes a 3-5-2 formation which offers a lot more attacking potential.
This could be a 4-2-3-1 that becomes a 4-4-2, when the AM and STC spread and form a front 2, leading the press. Or when a 4-3-3 becomes a 4-4-2, when one of the wingers stays with the striker to form a front 2, and the other drops back into the defensive line. I like to call this formation "shifting". 3. Switch the Play. Aside from having a trio of center midfielders, the main advantage of playing with a 4-5-1 formation is width. One of the best ways to create space and 1v1 opportunities is to switch the play often. This drags the opposition back and forth, slowly wearing them down and pulling them out of shape.
