Has anyone done their timing chain service? Was just told by my mechanic around 100k miles I should look into doing this service. Parts alone are $4,200 from what I have seen. I have a 2010 Audi S5 with 84k miles currently. Any feedback will help please. The 2 quotes were $3,500-$4,500 (Cynically wondering why the cost is so "low") and the other was a minimum of $6,500, but they expect it to be more, once they dig in and see what else shows excessive wear.
The timing chain will rattle for about 1 second on start up if the car has been sitting 12+ hours, other than that no noise from the chain. Ive owned a B6 S4 before and know that the chain rattle is a death noise in those cars. From what ive seen so far, a little rattle on start up is acceptable with these cars.
Mine failed at 105k miles and my mechanic said he thinks the valves are bent as well. The issue appeared one evening when the car had trouble starting, was shaking a lot, and couldn’t even make it down the block. The cost to pull apart the engine, replace the valves, and replace the timing chain is expected to cost $5000-6000. Looks like my air pump is going or blew a fuse. I didnt see it in the service manual for recommended times. I'm at 150k miles and nothing has exploded just yet ( knock on wood) I had the tensioners done. $4400 at the dealership. 2013 with 95k. Found out around 88k and was fine except for the occasional rattle.

I have heard it is expensive also, since they have to pull the motor and transmission to replace. Cheers, Chuck. Yes, the motor and tranny do have to come out. On our cars the timing chain is at the back of the engine so therefore to get to it everything has to come out. And yes, timing chains should not got out at 75 or even 150. 1.
