Thing with Alfa is that it is pretty much a hit 'n' miss situation. I have an 159 and the thing is reliable but i bought it new and have taken care of it. 10 years now, car still has no issues other than the electronics being a bit shit - parktronic doesn't work properly.

This is a common issue with the 2.2JTS engine, the problem is usually down to one of two things -. A/ Build up on the intake valves (A common issue with direct injection engines) B/ Dirty/Clogged fuel injectors. At the next service I suggest you try some Liqui-Moly Petrol Engine Intake Decarb before changing the oil.

That said, the Alfas sold in the US up until 1995 were like the Ferrari-lites also being sold at the time. Both marques have moved along in terms of maintenance requirements. Both are perfectly reliable if you are willing to engage in constant maintenance. And driving an Alfa is uniquely Italian.

The 159 series was one of the more reliable cars Alfa Romeo has ever produced, they are also very cheap. Just find one with it's books and a full service history. Also find yourself an independent mechanic that knows these cars. I've had my Brera for 3 years now and haven't had a single issue.
